Workarounds for Radeon HD 5000 Series Vertical Stripes Issue

AMD's latest ATI Radeon HD 5000 series is indeed selling like hotcakes. Only three weeks ago, AMD had announced that it had shipped two million DirectX 11 GPUs. However as history has taught us, new products sometimes mean new issues. Since the official launch of the HD 5000 series, there have been many lockup reports on several forums. This lockup happens mostly during 3D mode and is accompanied by vertical stripes appearing on the screen (But sometimes it appears as a black screen) and looping sound. So far, we haven't found any information on AMD's website, but luckily one of our systems was affected and it allowed us to investigate this issue.

We have tested all these possible workarounds (except for the last two), but only updating the BIOS to a newer version or boosting the GPU voltage has solved this issue on our ATI Radeon HD 5770 (reference design). After further investigation, we discovered that AMD has increased the GPU voltage in newer BIOS versions, but hasn't posted it anywhere. It seems that AMD needs to come up with a knowledge base article to address this issue. Until then, you can try the workarounds listed above - they worked for us. NGOHQ

NZXT Hades Case Review

NZXT has just released a new mid-tower case, Hades, featuring a three-channel digital thermometer and lots of fans. Hades has a small mesh on both side panels for air intake, and a big mesh that has a big 200-mm fan attached to it on the left panel. This fan uses 190-mm blades, so it actually has the same performance of some 230-mm fans that also use 190-mm blades. No detailed technical specs are provided by the manufacturer. This fan uses a small three-pin connector for you to install it directly on your motherboard, but the case comes with an adaptor to be used if you wish to connect this fan directly on the power supply.

Hades comes with a front door, which is all meshed to improve airflow. On the top part of this door we have the main highlight from this case, its digital thermometer. This thermometer is capable of monitoring three different points from your system thru the three thermal sensors that come attached to it. The three temperatures are displayed at the same time, in red. The temperature can be read in either Celsius or Fahrenheit and you can switch the system thru a switch found on the back of the door. Matrox Multiple Graphics eXpansion Module Announced

Connect two Matrox DualHead2Go or TripleHead2Go units directly into your system to achieve a four- or six-monitor workspace

Matrox Graphics Inc., the leading manufacturer of specialized graphics solutions, today announced multiple DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go Graphics eXpansion Module (GXM) support to drive up to four or six monitors, respectively, from a single system. A second GXM can now be connected to the secondary output of a supported dual monitor graphics card so two DualHead2Go GXMs can power up to four outputs in 2x2 or 4x1 modes, while two TripleHead2Go units can be combined to connect six displays to produce either a 3x2 or 6x1 set up.

"Multi-GXM support offers a tremendous amount of flexibility by simply having to connect the GXMs externally to your system or workstation," says Ron Berty, Business Development Manager, Matrox Graphics. "Business professionals for example, can now conveniently upgrade to a four- or six-monitor workspace to run additional applications for real-time viewing. Additionally, AV specialists can effortlessly build six-screen presentation or digital signage platforms to drive dynamic, digital messaging while benefiting from the natural synchronization of the screens being driven by a single GPU."

Matrox currently offers multi-GXM support with the 2.06 (or above) GXM software suite. A maximum of two GXMs -- of the same make and model -- can be connected to a supported graphics card with two available outputs of the required type. Multi-GXM stretched desktop mode is available with Matrox M-Series cards, while independent desktop support is available with supported M-Series, ATI, and NVIDIA graphics cards. For complete details, visit http://www.matrox.com/multiple_gxms/.

Matrox partners will be showcasing this technology, alongside a wide range of Matrox digital signage graphics solutions, at Integrated Systems Europe 2010, RAI, Netherlands, from February 2-4.

G.Skill Falcon-II Solid State Drive Review

Today we are checking out the new G.Skill Falcon II which is set to become one of the cheapest SSDs money can buy. Generally the words "cheap" and "SSD" do not go together, and when they do it's rarely a good thing. However the Falcon II aims to deliver quality SSD performance at an affordable price.

Throughout the course of this year we have reviewed a number of high-end products ranging from graphics cards made up of over 4 billion transistors with peak bandwidths of over 250GB/s, to eight threaded processors capable of operating at well beyond 3.0GHz! However, out of all the crazy and impressive hardware that we have reviewed this year, it is the Solid-State Disk that really caught our attention. LegionHardware

Mionix Keid-20 Gaming Headset Review

In the last week I've taken a look at regular headphones and earbuds, so today I have a gaming headset to round things off a bit. Mionix is a company based out of Sweden actually, and they're trying to get into the market on this side of the ocean so they're not very well known here. They do however make some pretty good products, I've got a couple of their mice and like them quite a bit, using one right now actually. They've recently released a gaming headset called the Keid 20 and that's what I've got of review for you today. The Keid 20 is a very comfortable headset that's nicely made and designed with decent audio but it does have one flaw, so read on to learn more... TestFreaks
